Sustainable Agriculture Mentorship Program

Sustainable Agriculture Mentorship Program

Agriculture is the backbone of so many economies here, yet young scientists often feel disconnected from the real challenges farmers face. This program pairs undergraduate students with experienced agro-scientists and local farmers. They spend months in the field learning that theory in a textbook is quite different from dealing with unpredictable rain or soil depletion.

I think the best part is seeing the students’ perspectives change. They start off wanting to apply complex, expensive tech, but eventually, they learn to innovate with what is actually available. It is a bit messy, and there is usually a lot of trial and error, but that is honestly where the best learning happens. We are not just training people; we are shaping the way they look at food security.

The results are always rewarding. Many of the participants have gone on to develop low-cost irrigation solutions or better composting methods that work for small-scale farmers. It feels good to know that we are fostering solutions that are actually usable, rather than just academic papers that sit on a shelf.
