Viral diseases continue to shape global health, economies, and societies. From seasonal influenza and endemic infections to emerging pathogens with pandemic potential, viruses impose a substantial burden through morbidity, mortality, long-term complications, and socioeconomic disruption—disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations and resource-limited settings. The Young Scientists Association hosted a webinar which brought together emerging researchers and experts to examine the multifaceted challenge of viral diseases through a rigorous scientific lens. Participants explored: Global burden and impact — epidemiological patterns, disease burden metrics, and the broader societal and economic consequences of viral infections. Prevention strategies — vaccination, public health measures, surveillance systems, and the critical role of preparedness in limiting transmission. Research frontiers — advances in virology, host–pathogen interactions, genomic surveillance, and innovative tools driving discovery. Treatment and therapeutics — antiviral development, supportive care, and emerging modalities that improve clinical outcomes. Awareness and scientific communication — the importance of evidence-based knowledge dissemination in fostering informed communities and supporting effective public health responses. Designed for young scientists, students, and early-career professionals, the session emphasized clarity, scientific integrity, and actionable insights. The Young Scientists Association (YSA) hosted an engaging webinar on “Securing Scholarships”, aimed at equipping students and young professionals with practical knowledge and strategies for identifying, preparing for, and successfully applying for scholarship opportunities. The webinar brought together experienced scholars and researchers who shared valuable insights on crafting competitive scholarship applications, developing strong personal profiles, preparing effective statements of interest and motivation letters, and avoiding common application pitfalls. Participants also had an opportunity to learn about available scholarship programmes and gain practical guidance on how to strengthen their applications and improve their chances of securing funding for further education and professional development. Key Areas Discussed included -Crafting a winning scholarship application -Building a competitive academic and professional profile -Preparing effective statements of interest -Writing strong motivation letters -Common scholarship application pitfalls and mistakes to avoid -Identifying and accessing available scholarship opportunities, and Practical strategies for improving scholarship applications. The webinar provided an important platform for knowledge sharing, mentorship, and career development, particularly for students and young scientists seeking opportunities to advance their education and professional careers through scholarships. The event demonstrated the Association’s commitment to empowering young scientists and students through mentorship, professional development, access to opportunities, and knowledge sharing.
The Young Scientists Association (YSA) hosted an insightful scientific webinar on “Harnessing Innovation and Emerging Technologies to Drive Climate Action, Food Security and Africa’s Bioeconomic Future.” The webinar brought together researchers, scientists, and young professionals to explore how scientific innovation and emerging technologies can contribute to addressing some of Africa’s most pressing environmental, agricultural, and socioeconomic challenges. The discussion examined the role of innovation, technology, research, and scientific collaboration in strengthening climate resilience, improving food security, and unlocking opportunities within Africa’s emerging bioeconomy. Speakers shared perspectives on how advances in science and technology can support sustainable development while creating new opportunities for research, entrepreneurship, and economic transformation. Key Areas Discussed included -Innovation and emerging technologies for climate action -Science and technology solutions for food security -Climate-smart agriculture and sustainable food systems -The potential of Africa’s bioeconomy -Research and innovation for sustainable development -Technology-driven approaches to climate resilience -Opportunities for young scientists in emerging scientific fields, and Strengthening collaboration between researchers, institutions, and communities. The webinar provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary dialogue, highlighting the important role that African scientists, researchers, innovators, and young professionals can play in developing locally relevant solutions to climate change, food insecurity, and sustainable economic development. The event reinforced the need to harness Africa’s scientific talent, technological capacity, and biological resources responsibly to build resilient communities, strengthen food systems, and advance a sustainable and inclusive bioeconomic future. The webinar featured experienced speakers namely: Prof. Douglas Miano — University of Nairobi, Dr. Dennis Beesigamukama — International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE)and Eunice Miriti — Research Scientist- KePHIS with Bravin Ndiya as the Moderator.
The Young Scientists Association successfully hosted a scientific webinar exploring “The Global Scope of Cancer, bringing together young scientists, researchers, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders to examine cancer as a growing global public health challenge. The webinar provided a comprehensive perspective on the global burden and impact of cancer, highlighting key issues surrounding cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, research, and public awareness. Discussions also emphasized the importance of scientific innovation, collaborative research, equitable access to healthcare, and strengthened cancer prevention strategies in addressing disparities across different regions of the world. The session created an opportunity for participants to exchange knowledge, share perspectives, and reflect on the role of young scientists and researchers in advancing cancer research and improving health outcomes.
